How much do you need to retire in India?
Start from your annual spending, not from a round number someone quoted on the internet.

How do I estimate how much I need to retire?
Start with annual retirement expenses, adjust for inflation until your retirement date, and model the corpus needed to support withdrawals. A 25–30 times annual-expense estimate is a scenario, not a safe-withdrawal guarantee; taxes, longevity, market risk and healthcare can change the target.
The method
- Estimate your annual expenses in today's money, excluding costs that end (EMIs, children's education) and adding ones that grow (healthcare).
- Inflate to your retirement year. At 6% inflation, costs roughly double every twelve years.
- Multiply the inflated annual figure by 25–30 to get a target corpus. This corresponds to withdrawing around 3.5–4% a year.
A worked example
Annual expenses today: ₹6,00,000. Retirement in 25 years. At 6% inflation, that becomes roughly ₹25,75,000 a year. A 25× target implies a corpus near ₹6.4 crore.
That figure is intimidating precisely because inflation is doing the work. It is also why starting early changes the required monthly amount so dramatically.
| Years to retirement | Assumed return | Monthly investment for ₹6.4 crore |
|---|---|---|
| 30 | 11% | ~₹22,000 |
| 25 | 11% | ~₹40,000 |
| 20 | 11% | ~₹75,000 |
| 15 | 11% | ~₹1,55,000 |

Count what you already have
- EPF — employer and employee contributions, compounding at a notified rate
- PPF — long-tenure, tax-favoured
- NPS — market-linked, retirement-specific
- Existing mutual funds and equity
Subtract the projected value of these from your target before sizing new contributions. Many people are further along than they assume.
The three levers
Increase contributions, extend the horizon, or reduce planned retirement spending. Chasing higher returns is not a fourth lever — it is the one input you cannot control.
What to do today
Write down your annual expenses, multiply by 25–30 after inflating, and check what your current EPF and investments are on track to become. Then see the financial goals guide and what compounding really means.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 25x rule?
Multiplying your expected annual retirement expenses by 25 gives a corpus consistent with withdrawing about 4% a year. Many Indian planners prefer 30x for a longer retirement.
Does EPF alone fund retirement?
Rarely on its own, though it is a substantial base. Most people need additional long-term investing to close the gap.
What inflation rate should I assume?
Five to six percent for general expenses is common in India, and healthcare typically inflates faster, so it is worth modelling separately.
