Is a personal loan cheaper than credit card debt?

A personal loan can cost less than a revolving credit card balance, but compare the full repayment, fees, tenure and prepayment terms. A card cleared in full within its interest-free terms is a different case from a carried balance. Borrowing for optional spending may be avoidable altogether.

The structural difference

Credit cardPersonal loan
StructureRevolving limit, no end dateFixed amount, fixed tenure
Cost if repaid in full monthlyEffectively nilNot applicable
Cost if carriedHighest common consumer rateLower, fixed EMI
Repayment disciplineDepends on youEnforced by the EMI
FeesAnnual fee, late fee, cash-advance feeProcessing fee, prepayment charges

When a personal loan is the better tool

  • You already carry a card balance and the loan's all-in cost is clearly lower.
  • The expense is large, one-off and genuinely unavoidable — a medical event, a family obligation.
  • You want a forced end date rather than an open balance.

When the card wins

  • You can clear the statement in full every month. Then it is free short-term credit plus purchase protection.
  • The amount is small and you will repay it within one cycle.

When neither is right

For discretionary buys — a phone upgrade, a holiday, a wedding upgrade — the honest answer is usually to delay and save. Borrowing for consumption converts a future month's income into today's purchase at a premium.

Before you sign either

  1. Write down the total you will repay, not the EMI.
  2. Check the prepayment rules — can you clear it early without a penalty?
  3. Check what the EMI does to your monthly fixed bucket. If fixed costs cross roughly half your take-home, the loan is too big.
  4. Confirm the lender is regulated and read the key facts statement.

Rates, fees and eligibility differ by lender and change over time. Model the EMI with the EMI calculator, and if you already have card debt, start with how to clear it.

Frequently asked questions

Is a personal loan cheaper than a credit card?

Usually yes if you would otherwise carry a card balance, because revolving card credit is priced far higher. Compare the all-in cost including processing fees.

Does taking a personal loan hurt my credit score?

A new loan and its enquiry can dip your score briefly. Consistent on-time EMIs typically help over time; missed payments hurt significantly.
