What is the best order to clear credit card debt?
Stop adding new spending, list each card balance and its current interest rate, pay every minimum on time, and direct extra repayment to the highest-rate balance. Compare refinancing only after including fees and terms. Avoided interest is a saving on borrowing costs, not an investment return.
Understand what you are actually paying
- Interest accrues from the transaction date once you stop paying in full, not from the bill date.
- Paying the minimum due keeps the account current but barely touches the principal. It is a solvency signal, not a repayment plan.
- Cash withdrawals on a card usually attract a fee plus interest from day one, with no interest-free period.
- Late payment fees and taxes stack on top of interest.
The clearing sequence
- Stop new spending on the card. Move daily spending to UPI or a debit card until the balance is zero. You cannot outrun a balance you keep feeding.
- List every card: outstanding amount and interest rate.
- Pay the minimum on all, and everything spare on the most expensive one. When it clears, roll that payment to the next. This is the avalanche method and it costs the least in total interest.
- Consider a cheaper replacement loan only if it genuinely lowers the rate: converting the balance to a bank EMI plan, a personal loan, or a secured loan. Compare the all-in cost including processing fees, not the advertised rate.
- Rebuild a small buffer so the next unexpected expense does not go back on the card.
| Option | Typical cost direction | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Revolving the card | Highest | Interest from transaction date |
| Card EMI conversion | Lower than revolving | Processing fee, tenure, prepayment terms |
| Personal loan | Usually lower still | Fees, credit score impact, temptation to reuse the card |
| Secured loan (gold, deposit) | Lowest | You are pledging an asset |
Protect your credit score while you do it
Pay at least the minimum on every card every month — payment history is the biggest factor in your bureau score. Keeping utilisation low on the cards you keep helps too. You can check your credit report free periodically with the bureaus.

Frequently asked questions
Is paying the minimum due on a credit card safe?
It keeps the account from going delinquent but leaves most of the principal outstanding while interest keeps accruing. Treat it as a floor, never as a repayment plan.
Should I take a personal loan to clear my credit card?
Only if the all-in cost including fees is genuinely lower and you stop using the card. Otherwise you end up servicing both.
Which card should I clear first?
The one with the highest interest rate, while paying minimums on the rest. That costs the least total interest.
