Saving: building the buffer everything else stands on

Saving is not the opposite of spending. It is buying yourself the ability to make calm decisions later.

The short answer

Save in a defined order: first an emergency fund of three to six months of essential expenses in a savings account or liquid deposit, then money for goals inside two years in deposits, then longer-term money in investments. Fix the amount as a share of take-home pay, move it on salary day, and keep emergency money separate from spending money.

How much emergency savings do I need?

Before investing, before extra loan repayment, before any goal with a date on it: keep enough cash to survive a break in income.

The buffer is measured in months of essential spending, not months of salary. Essentials are rent, food, utilities, transport, insurance premiums and minimum loan payments — the things that continue whether or not you are employed.

Where short-term money belongs

The purpose of this money is availability, not return. It should be reachable within a day or two and it should not be able to fall in value.

  • A savings account for the first month of expenses
  • A sweep-in fixed deposit for additional cash, after checking withdrawal terms
  • A liquid fund only for money you can wait to redeem: it is market-linked, can lose value and is not deposit-insured
  • Not equity, not anything with a lock-in, and not the same account you spend from

Savings rate is the number that predicts outcomes

Savings rate is what you save divided by what you take home. It matters more than the return you earn, especially in your first decade of working: raising your rate from 10% to 20% doubles your contributions immediately, while chasing two extra percentage points of return does not.

Automate, then forget

A standing instruction dated one day after your salary credit removes the monthly decision. Increase it by half of every raise and your saving grows without ever feeling like a cut.

Once the buffer is full

Then, and only then, does the question become investing or clearing debt faster. Size your target with the emergency fund calculator, and compare where to keep an emergency fund.

Check DICGC's deposit insurance information when assessing bank deposits. Eligible deposits are insured up to ₹5 lakh per depositor per bank, including principal and interest, with accounts held in the same right and capacity combined. This protection does not cover mutual funds.

Frequently asked questions

Should I invest while building an emergency fund?

Split the contribution if it keeps you motivated, but the buffer should reach at least one month of essentials before anything is locked away.

Is a fixed deposit a good place for an emergency fund?

A sweep-in or short-tenure FD works well for the portion beyond your first month, because it is liquid within a day or two and does not fall in value.

How do I rebuild the fund after using it?

Treat the top-up as your first commitment for the next few months, ahead of investing. That is exactly what the fund was for.
