How this compound interest calculator works

Enter a starting amount, the annual rate, the number of years and how often interest compounds. Add a monthly contribution if you plan to keep adding. The calculator shows the final balance, everything you contributed and the interest earned on top.

TermMeaning
PrincipalThe amount you start with
Compounding frequencyHow often interest is added back to the balance
Monthly additionA recurring contribution, compounded monthly

The last years matter most

Compounding is back-loaded. Most of the growth in a long horizon appears in the final third, which is exactly when people are most tempted to withdraw.

What to do next

Read the saving guide for where these balances belong, or use the SIP calculator if the money is going into market-linked funds rather than a fixed rate.

Read what compounding means to understand growth on growth. Check current tax treatment with the Income Tax Department; this projection does not deduct tax or model changing rates.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between simple and compound interest?

Simple interest is earned only on the original amount. Compound interest is earned on the original amount plus all the interest already added, so the balance grows faster the longer it is left alone.

Does compounding frequency matter much?

Less than people expect. Moving from yearly to monthly compounding at the same rate changes the outcome modestly. The time frame and the rate do most of the work.

Can I use this for a fixed deposit or PPF?

Yes, as an estimate. Enter the quoted rate and the compounding frequency the product uses. Actual credited amounts can differ slightly because of rounding and payout dates.

Is the result adjusted for inflation?

No. It shows the future rupee amount. To think in today's money, subtract your inflation assumption from the rate before entering it.
